I am in desperate need of inspiration. Inspiration to write, to take the next step, even to move. So, in an effort to work myself out of this funk, I am going to list off all the ideas/things/actions that have inspired me in the past in the hopes that one of them will light a spark somewhere inside of me and get me moving again.
We all have these moments, sometimes hours or even days, of inertia, apathy, feeling like we’re stuck in a pile of sludge and just can’t find our way out. But there is always a way out. It’s usually just a matter of time – or if one happens upon it – inspiration.
The Inspiration Wish List
- Opening any of SARK’s books to a random page
- Reading old love letters or cards from loved ones
- Browsing through old picture albums
- Writing in my journal
- Scribbling down a poem
- Putting on “Hey Ya” by Outkast and having a dance party – even if it’s a party of one
- Watching movies with great stories about dancers, writers, artists, & teachers (my faves in that order are Step Up, Little Women, Miss Potter, and Dead Poet Society)
- Skimming a blog I love (like ZenHabits.net or ApartmentTherapy.com)
- Asking my son or my husband for a l….o….n….g hug
- Going for a walk outside
- Working out, even if it’s just for 5 minutes
- Organizing something trivial (like the kitchen junk drawer)
- Picking 10+ things from my closet/around the house to donate
- Planning a party or event for someone else
- Taking 5 deep breaths
- Closing my computer and not letting myself get back on for at least an hour
- Folding hot laundry right out of the dryer
- Playing a board game with family
- Having a cup of hot tea and dark chocolate
- Calling a dear friend and venting*
- Taking a bath by candlelight
- Window shopping at my favorite stores
- Taking a cat nap
- Going to bed early
- Waking up early
- Smiling for no reason
- Letting myself daydream
- Listening to The Spinners
- Making lists like this one
*A dear friend just called me in the middle of writing this post, and I am out of the funk! My wish for inspiration worked! Time for celebration – and action! I love how sending out the energy of seeking inspiration brought it right to my door when I needed it most.
Here’s hoping this list helps you get inspiration when you need it. Feel free to add your own ideas in the comments – I’d love to hear what lights you up and gets you moving!
“I am convinced that there are universal currents of Divine Thought vibrating the ether everywhere and that any who can feel these vibrations is inspired.”
~ Richard Wagner (German Composer 1813-1883)

I loved reading this, as I can often get into that funk too, where inspiration seems to be vanished from my vision.
It also reminded me of a time some where between the grand canyon and boulder, at around 4 am discussing the list of the things we want to accomplish in a day, a week, a month, and so on, I hope you still keep those… I think I’ll head off and work on some lists of my own.
