At this point in my life, if I was asked to give one piece of advice to anyone, this would be it.  My recent focus on simplifying my life and honing in on what really matters has caused me to reflect upon the basic principles I live by.  I have questioned some, rejected some and come to the conclusion that the most important principle is to be honest – always.

letter-1Before I start this post, I must confess that I am plunged deep into the beautifully written letters of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.  I am close to finishing the book, and it has renewed my love for letters in a most unexpected and extraordinary way.  There is simply nothing that can replace the intimacy or joy of a well-written letter from a dear friend.

brother & sisterI recently spent a few days with my immediate family in a sort of early Thanksgiving.  It was the first time we’d all been in the same place in a year.  I can honestly say I had some of the best moments I’ve ever had with all of us together.  Tears were shed, laughter resounded off the walls and embraces were suspended in a timeless place where we were both content if we never let go.

Even though the events, the doing, of our time together was far from extravagant family fun (going through old boxes in the garage and wandering around Ikea for hours among some of our adventures), it was in the being together that we found ourselves.

channelWhen I think about what I value most in a friend, hands-down it’s honesty.  I believe honesty with self must come first.  It’s far more important, in my experience, than being honest with others.  That may sound shocking to those of us who tend to put our responsibility to others before our responsibility to ourselves, but if we are not honest with ourselves, how can we truly be honest with others?

Man Listening

The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear.

Seems obvious, right?  But how hard this ancient Zen challenge really is.  How often do we really quiet ourselves and listen? Not listening for something we want to hear, or planning what we’re going to say next, or looking for fault in another.  But really listening.  Quietly, intently.
